Die 1965 von Hans Magnus Enzensberger gegründete Kulturzeitschrift zählt zu den wichtigsten Organen der Ausserparlamentarischen Opposition APO. Ab Nr. 15/1986 wechselte das Kursbuch von Suhrkamp zu Wagenbach, 1973 zu Rotbuch und seit 1990 erschien es im Rowohlt Verlag. Im Sommer 2005 und ab Nr. 161 übernahm die Zeit den Titel und veränderte Ausrichtung und Erscheinungsbild radikal.
